1908 - 1994 Architect, sculptor, painter, graphic artist and one of the principle representatives of concrete art. Co-founder and director of Ulm school of Arts and Crafts (1931-56) trained as a silversmith at the Zurich 'Kunstgewerbeschule'. Subsequently he studied at the Dessau Bauhaus under Josef Albers, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and others. In 1936 Bill formulated the Principles of Concrete Art, as a refinement of the ideas published by Theo van Doesburg (this form of abstractionism must be free of any symbolical association with reality, arguing that lines and colors are concrete by themselves) -Bill is one of the most important exponents of this art genre. In 1937 he worked on a monograph on Le Corbusier and entered the association of modern Swiss artists 'Allianz'. He was the head architect of the building and design sectors for the Swiss National Exhibit in Lausanne '64. A virtuoso designer and creative artist, Max Bill's work displays design clarity that is unrivaled to this day and his constructivist sculptures for public squares as well as his paintings have become popular in America, Europe and Asia.
